Building a Better Ring Mold

PVC Ring Mold

PVC Ring Mold

While working a batch of latkes for a pre-thanksgiving snack, I stumbled into my garage looking for something round — anything round — and preferably clean.   Sure enough I found what I needed, and now I turn to  my PVC ring molds any time I’m looking to make something small, circular, uniform, and perfect.

I used 2″ diameter, to make crab cake sliders for a recent football party with the same polished result.  Most stores carry sizes from 1 all the way to 6 inches, that can be cut to any length.  A hacksaw will do, but a mechanical saw will leave a smooth edge that’s easier to clean.

I’m guessing most cooks don’t turn to the hardware store when looking for cooking tools — but why not?  That’s where I found my blow torch for creme brulée.  A tool I first thought was  funny until my choice was vindicated by Michelle Poteaux-Garbee at Bastille.  If she uses the big blue beasts to caramel sugar on the fly,  I wonder what else I can find at Home Depot that will help refine the look and feel of what I cook.
