Talk about a blast from the past. Today’s NY Times burger feature really stoked some old memories. It’s been quite some time since I set off all over the D.C. area looking for bliss on a bun. The hunt was set off from a dislike of the voting systems employed by area publications. Popular voting reduced burger rankings into contests no more illuminating than a high school homecoming election. With Five Guys and Fuddruckers consistently winning prizes I knew the only way to find the best burger inside the beltway was to solicit nominations and hit the streets.
A month later I’d achieved a cholesterol score of 5,429 and still didn’t have a clue where the District’s best burger was. I did have a lot of fun though, and learned a few things about what makes a good burger great. This summer I’ll lay out a few tenants and show how standardization, and careful timing can yield consistent high quality results. For now though, I’m going to soak up what’s left of Spring… Lipitor be damned!
